About Deep Blue

Deep Blue has run small-boat reef and wall trips out of Cozumel's downtown Ferry Pier corridor since 1995, and has belonged to the island's dive-operator association, ANOAAT, since 1998. It is an SSI-badged Official Operator, running Discover Scuba Diving, Open Water and Advanced-level courses alongside its daily boat program.

Boats carry five to eight divers with a divemaster-led briefing and back-roll entries, a pattern independent trip reports have described consistently for more than a decade. Surface intervals are taken at a beach club pier shared with several other small operators, with fruit and bottled water provided (no towels). The centre advertises its boats as the fastest on the island; one detailed independent account rates them merely among the fastest, not the fastest outright.

Deep Blue also runs a dedicated program for cruise-ship passengers, with departure windows built around the ship's own schedule, not the cruise line's dive desk, gear brought straight to the boat, and a spare regulator available on request. Whale shark trips run June through September, and cenote diving on the mainland, freediving excursions and snorkeling tours round out a schedule built mainly around reef and wall diving.

What divers say

Reviewers return to one theme most often: named instructors and guides who take extra time with nervous, first-time or young divers, with a safety-first pre-dive routine that stays unhurried. Independent accounts spanning more than a decade describe the same small-boat operation under different staff names, consistent with a stable program surviving ordinary staff turnover. Logistics draw praise too, especially fast responses and easy coordination for cruise-ship passengers, with gear ready at the boat.

The one substantive complaint on record, from a multi-day booking, describes a thin welcome and a light safety briefing on the first day that improved on later days. More recent reviews do not repeat it, though the sample read is too small against the centre's full review history to call the pattern resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Deep Blue a good choice for a nervous or first-time diver?

Reviewers repeatedly single out named instructors for taking extra time with nervous, first-time and young divers, with a safety-first briefing that does not get rushed. Independent accounts describing this same pattern go back more than a decade, under different staff names, which points to a stable house approach, not the work of one good guide.

Does Deep Blue pick up cruise-ship passengers?

Yes. It runs a dedicated program for cruise-ship divers, with departure times built around the ship's schedule, so you are not tied to the cruise line's own dive desk. Gear is brought straight to the boat, and a spare regulator is available on request. The shop is roughly 10 to 15 minutes by taxi from the cruise piers.

How big are the boats and dive groups?

Boats run small, typically 5 to 8 divers, with a divemaster-led briefing and back-roll entries. That group size has held for well over a decade across independent accounts, even as the specific boats and staff have changed.

Is Deep Blue SSI or PADI affiliated?

It is badged an SSI Official Operator. The centre also advertises PADI courses, but no shop-level PADI affiliation is on record anywhere else, which more likely reflects individually PADI-certified instructors than a shop-wide PADI affiliation.

Does Deep Blue run whale shark tours?

Yes, seasonally, June through September. Cenote diving on the mainland and freediving excursions run as separate trips outside the core Cozumel reef and wall program.

How much do dives and courses cost?

Prices are not published on the centre's site. Contact the centre directly for current rates on courses, guided dives and equipment rental.

Where does the boat leave from?

The main pickup is a few minutes' walk from the Ferry Pier in downtown Cozumel, with a secondary pickup point just south of Punta Langosta. It does not appear to service piers further south of that.
