About Dive Paradise
Tom Hartdegen opened Dive Paradise in January 1984, a year after his own certification and first Cozumel dive trip. Renee "Apple" Applegate took over as manager in 1986 and ran the operation for three decades until her death in 2017, growing it to four locations and earning a place in the Women Divers Hall of Fame along the way. The shop today runs from a main coordination office and two beachfront bases, at the Cozumel Hotel & Resort and Club de Playa Villablanca, each with its own gear lockers and dock.
Five boats work the fleet, split into two tiers a diver chooses between: larger "Caribbean" boats on the standard trips, and smaller, faster "Express" boats for a surcharge, described the same way by returning divers for well over a decade. Courses run the full PADI ladder, with specialty and crossover training badged NAUI and SSI, alongside a small retail counter, Scubatiques, at the Cozumel Hotel base. The Signature Trip is reserved for divers with 50 or more logged dives: a run north to Barracuda and San Juan Reefs, sites the standard fleet does not visit, cleared only with a day's advance port-captain permission.
What divers say
The in-water team draws the most consistent praise, across every platform and every year sampled back to 2013. Captains, divemasters and crew are named individually by returning divers, and one name, Memo, turns up independently in both a 2026 Google review and a 2022 trip report. On TripAdvisor the operation sits mid-table, 167th of 618 boat-tour and water-sports listings on the island, at 4.2 from 557 reviews; Google runs slightly higher, at 4.3 from 169 ratings.
A separate, more consistent complaint runs through booking and office administration, not diving itself: price increases without warning, slow responses from the US reservations line, and at least one account of a promised extra dive not honoured after a booking mix-up.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the Caribbean and Express boat trips?▾
Caribbean boats are the larger, cheaper standard fleet used for the scheduled morning and afternoon trips. Express boats are smaller and faster, offered for a surcharge of roughly 10 to 15 dollars, and suit divers who want a smaller group and a quicker ride to the site.
Which reefs does the standard two-tank morning trip visit?▾
The morning trip rotates through central and southern reefs such as Palancar, Columbia, Paso del Cedral, San Francisco and Tormentos, chosen on the day for conditions. The Signature Trip is the separate booking for the island's north end.
What does the Signature Trip require?▾
Fifty or more logged dives, a personal dive computer, and prior diving with the shop to demonstrate proficiency. The route runs to Barracuda and San Juan Reefs on the north end of the island, sites the standard fleet does not visit, and the boat carries a port-captain permit obtained a day in advance.
Can I buy dive gear here, or only rent it?▾
Rental covers the standard kit: BCD, regulator, tank, computer, wetsuit and dive light, priced by the piece or as a package. The Scubatiques counter at the Cozumel Hotel base is a small retail counter for accessories and save-a-dive items, not a full gear shop.
Who runs Dive Paradise today?▾
The business was founded by Tom Hartdegen in 1984. Renee "Apple" Applegate ran it from 1986 until her death in 2017; both are named and documented in the shop's own history. No individual is named publicly as owner or manager since then, though the current team describes itself as having worked together for more than a decade.
How many boats does Dive Paradise actually run?▾
Five are individually named and specified on the shop's own fleet page: Atlantis, Coqueta, Aries, Paradise Diver and Cascabel, ranging from 30 to 44 feet. Marketing pages elsewhere on the same site describe a fleet of eleven, a figure well above what the fleet page itemises.
Has Dive Paradise had any safety incidents reported?▾
One 2013 forum account described a divemaster moving a group out of a cruise-ship lane by cutting a safety stop short in strong current. Responses on the same forum were split: several long-time customers, including one citing roughly 150 dives on the boats, said they had never seen unsafe conduct. No comparable account has surfaced in the years since.
