About

Daniel Crespo founded León Marino in Tarifa in 2014 out of a stated purpose: share the sea, and build conservation values along with it. A decade later the center holds SSI Diamond status for the fourth consecutive year and trains instructors alongside first-time divers. Nieves Moran directs day-to-day operations. The seven-person team covers the full SSI curriculum, from pool freediving sessions with Carlos Pallero to SCR closed-circuit rebreather instruction led by Crespo himself.

Two distinctions set León Marino apart from its Tarifa neighbours. First, a latest-generation BAUER compressor with PURE AIR certification delivers fills free of humidity, oil, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. No other center in Tarifa holds this certification. Second, SCR rebreather diving on the Mares Horizon unit is available at course level through to Extended Range. The technical curriculum also includes XR extended range, Nitrox 40%, and a full wreck diving specialty.

Three departures leave the harbour every morning at 09:00, 11:00, and 13:00. Groups are split by skill level. On-site facilities include a training pool, classroom, bar, lockers, and showers. The center is also an official MARES distributor and offers equipment repair for BCDs, dive computers, rebreathers, regulators, and tanks. Adapted diving for special needs is available on request.

What Divers Say

Safety delivered without rigidity is the theme that runs through nearly 600 Google reviews. "Seguridad-diversión-buen ambiente" appears across multiple assessments, and the 4.9 average across 584 ratings reflects consistency rather than a single batch of enthusiastic friends. On Facebook, 98% of 74 reviewers recommend the center outright.

First-time divers single out the personalised attention during try dives. The two-student-per-instructor limit is something reviewers notice and appreciate. Several returning visitors describe the center as a reference point for diving in Tarifa. German-speaking staff are available during peak summer months. The conservation focus through OCTOPUS TARIFA and the Blue Oceans program resonates with a portion of reviewers who describe it as a reason they return.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes León Marino different from other dive centers in Tarifa?
León Marino is the only center in Tarifa with BAUER PURE AIR certified air fills and one of the few in southern Spain running SCR rebreather courses on the Mares Horizon unit. It also holds SSI Diamond status for four consecutive years and operates an Instructor Training Center, a combination no other Tarifa center currently matches.
Can beginners learn to dive at León Marino Tarifa?
Yes. The SSI beginner path starts with a Try Scuba session capped at two students per instructor, then Basic Diver at 165 EUR, and continues through Open Water Diver. Basic Diver certification is accepted as credit toward OWD if completed within six months.
What rebreather diving does León Marino offer?
León Marino is an official SCR HORIZON Mares Center. Options include Try SCR Diving (135 EUR, includes certification and Horizon unit rental), a full SCR Diving course (550 EUR), and SCR Extended Range for experienced technical divers. The try-dive fee includes a 75 EUR discount toward the full course.
Does León Marino dive every day?
Yes, year-round. The office and dive operations run Monday to Sunday, 09:00 to 14:30 and 16:30 to 18:00. Three morning departures leave at 09:00, 11:00, and 13:00. Afternoon trips require at least two divers and are weather-dependent.
What dive sites does León Marino cover?
Over 15 sites around Isla de las Palomas within the Strait of Gibraltar Natural Park, covering depths from 3 to 40 metres. The roster includes La Piscina for all levels, vertical cliffs at Punta Marroqui reaching 45 metres, kelp forest diving at Las Laminarias, and several wrecks. León Marino developed the SSI MyDiveGuide program for the Tarifa region, mapping many of these sites.
Is León Marino involved in marine conservation?
Yes. The center holds the Blue Oceans Center distinction from SSI and is a member of OCTOPUS TARIFA, an association focused on seabed conservation around Isla de las Palomas. All instructors are trained to integrate ecological education into every dive.
