About
Odisseia Azul has run from Sesimbra's Porto de Abrigo since opening on 10 June 2003, describing its own founding as the fulfilment of a decade-long ambition. The centre moved into its current harbour premises in 2010 and added a locker room and classroom in a 2016 expansion. It is dual-affiliated with SSI and PADI, running both agencies' course ladders side by side so a diver can leave with either certification card, and frames the operation around a family ethos aimed at keeping a group's leisure time together. Technical Director Armando Esteves, a PADI/SSI Master Instructor who also holds a Local Skipper's licence and a Scubapro/Mares technician qualification, leads a small named team: skipper and centre assistant Ana Chaves, dive guide Jorge Santos, and centre support from Santiago Esteves and Manuel Procópio.
Guided boat dives run daily plus weekend and holiday outings along the Sesimbra coast, self-registered with SSI across eight local sites, among them Jardim das Gorgónias, Baía da Armação, Pedra do Leão, Batelão and Ponta da Passagem. The standard trip covers the coast up to Cabo Espichel; heading further north runs only when the sea allows and adds a EUR 5 per-person surcharge, the clearest marker on the centre's own price list of where its everyday range ends. Air and nitrox (EAN32) are both filled on site.
Beyond the local programme, Odisseia Azul sells and services new and used dive gear and rents a full equipment set by the day, and runs two international group trips for 2026: a week in Sharm el Sheikh and an eight-day, four-atoll Maldives itinerary aboard the vessel Southern Cross.
What divers say
Detailed reviews are few and older: three accounts, from 2014 and 2015, carry most of the descriptive detail available. The review base itself splits unevenly, too: one score rests on more than 40 ratings, the other on just 16, so the larger figure is the sturdier of the two, though both run high (see the rating above). Within the three-review sample the same names recur. One reviewer singles out Armando personally as one of the best instructors in the area and describes a family atmosphere that worked well with kids; another calls Odisseia Azul a favourite Sesimbra dive centre and praises the staff as qualified and friendly. A third mentions a large, stable boat that reassured a diver prone to seasickness, and credits the dive guide as clearly experienced. Marine life mentioned across the sample includes reef fish schools, nudibranchs, tube worms and octopus. No complaint surfaces in what's on record, but three reviews from a decade ago are too thin a sample to call that a settled pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Odisseia Azul's dual SSI/PADI affiliation mean for a course?▾
It runs both agencies' course ladders side by side rather than committing to one: the same core level is sold as SSI's Advanced Adventurer or PADI's Advanced Open Water, for example, and a diver can pick whichever certification card they'd rather carry without the price or content changing.
How far does the standard guided-dive product reach?▾
The everyday product covers the Sesimbra coast up to Cabo Espichel. Trips further north run only when the sea allows and add a EUR 5 per-person surcharge on top of the standard rate, so the wider range is the exception, not the default booking.
What are Odisseia Azul's opening hours?▾
Its registered office hours run weekends only: Saturday and Sunday, 09:00-18:00, closed the rest of the week. The centre also advertises daily guided dives alongside weekend and holiday outings, a broader picture than the registered hours alone suggest. Confirm directly with the centre before planning a weekday visit.
Which local sites does Odisseia Azul dive?▾
Its own SSI registration names eight: 3 Milhas, Catrapona, Jardim das Gorgónias, Baía da Armação, Pedra do Leão, Batelão, Forte da Baralha and Ponta da Passagem, all within the standard Cabo Espichel range or the occasional trip beyond it.
Does Odisseia Azul run international trips?▾
Yes, two are advertised for 2026: a week in Sharm el Sheikh (18 dives, full board, from EUR 1,250) and an eight-day, four-atoll Maldives itinerary aboard the vessel Southern Cross (18 dives, full board, from EUR 2,250), alongside its regular Sesimbra-coast dive programme.
How reliable is the centre's online rating, given how few reviews it has?▾
Both scores are high, but the review counts differ a lot: one comes from a base of more than 40 reviews, the other from just 16. That's a small enough sample that a handful of extra reviews either way could shift it, so weigh the higher-volume score as the sturdier of the two.
Who runs the dives and courses?▾
Technical Director Armando Esteves, a PADI/SSI Master Instructor who also holds a Local Skipper's licence, leads a small named team: skipper and centre assistant Ana Chaves, dive guide Jorge Santos, and centre support from Santiago Esteves and Manuel Procópio. Reviewers independently single out Armando by name for his instruction.
