Also known as: Garden of the Gorgonians, Garden of the Gorgonias
A boat-accessed rock reef off Sesimbra, draped in gorgonians and soft corals, typically dived 14-16 m; easy and popular for its simple orientation.

The main rock at Jardim das Gorgónias is easy to read: one outcrop, one loop, keep it on your left and circle it, using the shallower north side to stretch the dive if you're watching your air. The main body sits around 15 m, where holes and cracks in the rock hide octopus, moray eels and forkbeard fish, and gorgonians and soft corals cover the exposed faces. Round the rock to the right and the terrain opens onto a broad sand patch, worth a slow look for flounder and stingrays lying still on the bottom. Cuttlefish and pipefish turn up along the rock face, and a resident school of seabream tends to fall in alongside divers on both the way down and the swim back to the boat, a quick crossing from Sesimbra.
Jardim das Gorgónias built its reputation on ease: one main rock, one simple loop, and the namesake gorgonian garden close enough to study on every pass. Sesimbra's boat fleet runs both wreck trips and reef trips, and this site is one of the reef side's calling cards, a macro-rich stop where gorgonians and soft corals are the draw, not the depth. Nudibranch numbers peak April to September, drawing photographers who make the trip specifically for them. It sits alongside a cluster of separately named Sesimbra reefs, Baía da Armação, Ponta da Passagem, Pedra do Meio, that operators list together but never treat as interchangeable.
Depth here isn't settled to one number: the best-documented figure is an average of 14 m with a maximum around 16 m, though a few diver logs report descents nearer 20 m and one shorter listing gives 10 m as the maximum. Plan around the 14-16 m range and treat anything deeper as bonus depth requiring Advanced-level comfort, not the norm. The site lies inside the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park, established in 1998 under Decreto Regulamentar 23/98 to protect the Arrábida coast, and part of the Natura 2000 network.1 Operator prices include reserve access, and there's no separate diver entrance fee. None of Sesimbra's dive centres markets Jardim das Gorgónias by name on its own site listings, so book it as part of a general reef trip out of Sesimbra and ask for this site specifically, since it won't show up as a named option in a brochure. Visibility typically runs 5-20 m across the wider Sesimbra coast, though one dive recorded just 1-2 m in July 2025, so pack a light and stay close to your buddy in case conditions close in on the day. Northerly summer winds can raise current at exposed Sesimbra sites; if it strengthens, tuck in against the rock and avoid pushing into open water. Bring a camera: the nudibranch numbers here are worth the extra weight, especially April to September.
What makes this dive site stand out.
The main outcrop is covered in gorgonians and soft corals, the site's namesake
A single, easy-to-follow lap around the main rock keeps the dive relaxed
A resident school often shadows divers on the descent and the swim back
Sightings run strongest April-September, some species present year-round
Lies within the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park, part of Natura 2000
38.4358°N, 9.0638°W
Nudibranch numbers peak in this window; some divers instead rate January-February the clearest water across the wider Sesimbra coast
Fits the best-documented 14-16 m range; diver logs reporting descents nearer 20 m call for Advanced-level comfort

Plan for 14-16 m: that's the range the best-documented source gives, and it's what most operators brief before the dive. A few diver logs and one shorter listing push outside that window, but treat those as the exception rather than what to expect on a typical booking.
Yes, at its best-documented depth range of 14-16 m. If you or your guide follow the deeper diver-log reports toward 20 m, that edges past standard Open Water limits, so Advanced-level comfort is a better fit for that version of the dive.
No separate diver fee applies. The site sits inside the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park, and operator prices already include reserve access.
April through September is the peak window, though some species are present year-round.
Visibility across the wider Sesimbra coast typically runs 5-20 m, best in winter and lower in summer. One dive at this site recorded just 1-2 m in July 2025, so treat the typical range as a guide, not a guarantee. Water temperature runs from around 14-17 C in winter to 17-20 C in summer; a semi-dry suit covers summer, a drysuit is the standard winter choice.
No. All three are separately named reefs in Sesimbra's boat-diving cluster, listed together on local operators' site lists but never treated as the same dive.
