About
PuraVida DiveHouse is a family-run SSI dive centre and guest house at Baleeira, on the western tip of the Algarve, a few minutes from Sagres. Founder Cristóvão "Cris" Catarino, a dive instructor since 1999, converted his grandfather's four-generation family property into the centre and hostel in 2013, after years diving and surfing abroad, so a course or a week of diving comes with a bed in the same building.
Courses run through SSI, with PADI available on request, from a first try-dive through professional level, taught in English, Portuguese and Spanish; the minimum age for a diving certification is ten. Mornings are a double boat dive to sites five to ten minutes out; afternoons shift to a single shore dive on the house reef, and certified divers can rent a tank and work the reef unguided. The centre names more than thirty sites along the Sagres coast, from shallow reefs like Ingrina to two deeper wrecks: Torvore, graded Advanced at 27 to 30 metres, and Wilhelm Kragg, deeper again at 29 to 36 metres, past the usual Advanced Open Water limit; the centre doesn't say what extra training those last six metres need. The beginner-graded Burgau Wreck is another named site, though the centre's own figure for it, 6-9 metres, runs deeper than other accounts of the same wreck, which describe an easy 0-3 metre shore dive. Its shallow cave dive, marketed as one of the world's top 100 dive sites, runs from about a metre to eighteen through a chamber shaped like a cathedral dome.
Air and Nitrox come from an on-site Bauer compressor, and the shop doubles as classroom, rinse area and gear-repair bench between dives.
What divers say
Reviewers on the diving side keep naming the same handful of guides: Alberto, nicknamed "The Sniper" more than once, comes up alongside Chris, Ricardo and Francisco, with repeated praise for how safety-conscious the operation feels and how well the gear is kept. One diver whose booked dive did not go ahead because of conditions still rated the experience highly, crediting guide Atturo's effort on the day. Sightings mentioned repeatedly include octopus, cuttlefish, moray and conger eel, and nudibranchs, with one account of dolphins passing during a surface interval. The centre's diving-specific reviews sit close to a perfect score, well above its much larger, more general rating, which likely blends dive guests with the guest-house side of the business.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stay somewhere while I dive with PuraVida DiveHouse?▾
Yes. The dive centre shares its building with a small guest house in the same converted family property, so a course or a week of diving can run alongside a bed a short walk from the shop. The guest house and the diving side are reviewed and booked separately, sharing the same address and team.
What's the deepest dive PuraVida DiveHouse runs, and what certification do I need?▾
The centre's deepest named wreck is Torvore, a First World War wreck it grades Advanced at 27 to 30 metres. Wilhelm Kragg, its other wreck dive, runs deeper again, to 36 metres, past the Advanced Open Water limit of 30 metres; the centre doesn't state what extra training or supervision that depth needs, so ask before booking it. Its shallower named sites sit well within Open Water depth, including the beginner-graded Burgau Wreck, though the centre states it at 6-9 metres, deeper than other reports of an easy 0-3 metre shore dive for the same wreck.
When's the best time of year to dive with PuraVida DiveHouse?▾
The centre points to December as its best month for visibility, a claim that sits at odds with the wider pattern reported for this stretch of the Algarve, where spring and early autumn are more commonly named as the clearer, calmer months. Summer brings strong winds that the centre says do not affect the diving itself.
What does a typical day of diving look like with PuraVida DiveHouse?▾
Mornings are a boat trip with two dives at sites five to ten minutes out; afternoons switch to a single shore dive on the house reef right at the base. Certified divers who know the site can rent a tank and work the house reef on their own, without a guide.
Is there a cave dive near Sagres?▾
PuraVida DiveHouse runs a shallow cave dive it calls The Cathedral, descending from around a metre to eighteen through a chamber the centre describes as shaped like a cathedral dome. The centre markets it as one of the world's top 100 dive sites, a claim from its own material rather than an independent ranking.
Does PuraVida DiveHouse run programmes for kids and teens?▾
Beyond the standard certification track, which starts at age ten, the centre runs a dedicated Kids programme and multi-day Teens Scuba Dive Camps that combine certification, fun dives and the on-site accommodation.
