Carrapateira
Also known as: Carapateira
A weather-gated reef and canyon dive on the Algarve's exposed west coast: caves, overhangs and boulders from a shallow 1m shelf to a 16m canyon route.

The dive
The Algarve's coastline turns from its sheltered south face to the open Atlantic at Sagres, and Carrapateira dives on the far side of that corner: a protected cove with a cliff on one side and an underwater canyon opening beyond it. Divers work through little caves and overhangs cut into volcanic rock, then into a wider run of large boulders to swim between. A shallower shelf, one to fourteen metres, sits over ground reached by kayak or from the coastline; the fuller route drops through the canyon to around sixteen metres, reached instead on a weather-permitting boat trip. Reef fish move through the gaps at both depths, and conger eels and rays use the caves and overhangs as cover.
What makes it special
Carrapateira dives the open, west-facing Atlantic coast, unlike most of the Algarve's south-facing sites, inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, north of the sheltered cape at Sagres. That exposure also makes this a weather call, not a standing booking: conditions on the open headland decide whether a trip goes out on a given day. The shallow and deep sections above read less like a contradiction than one dive with two different ways in: a gentle entry suited to beginners, and a fuller canyon route pitched at more experienced divers.
Know before you go
The park's exact zoning and any diving-specific permit for this point has not been established, so check the current rules before you dive. Caves, overhangs and swim-throughs run through the canyon, none of them a fully enclosed system; open-water training covers them, and a guide is the right lead through the tighter spots. Pack for cooler water than the Algarve's south coast: this west-facing stretch runs closer to 15°C in winter, and a 7mm wetsuit is the area-wide standard year-round.
Why Dive Carrapateira
What makes this dive site stand out.
- West-coast location
On the open Atlantic coast, north of the sheltered Sagres cape
- Canyon and cave terrain
An underwater canyon, little caves, overhangs and swim-throughs among large boulders
- Two-tier depth profile
A shallow 1-14m section and a deeper, weather-gated canyon route to around 16m
- Natural park setting
Sits inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park
- Run by two operators
Blue Ocean Divers and PuraVida DiveHouse both run trips to this exact site, uncommon for a site this far up the west coast
Depth & Profile
Conditions & difficulty
Clearest water Algarve-wide; no site-specific season data found for Carrapateira itself
The shallow 1-14m section is graded Beginner; the deeper canyon route to around 16m is better matched to Advanced Open Water, for the depth and for the site's weather-exposed current
Summary
Easy on the shallow inshore section; the exposed, weather-dependent outer canyon runs harder
Safety considerations
What can go wrong here, and what divers do about it. Conditions change - take the briefing from the operator on the day.
- Surface and boat traffic: Swell and wind on this exposed west-coast headland can cancel or reshape the dive; every source that names this site calls it weather-permitting, not a standing bookingBuild a backup plan and expect the trip to be called on the day
- Current: The adjacent headland carries a fast current, strong enough historically to have wrecked ships along this stretch of coastStay close to your guide's line rather than working against open current
- Overhead: Caves, overhangs and swim-throughs run through the canyon structure, though none is a fully enclosed caveKeep within open-water training limits and let a local guide lead any overhang or swim-through

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Carrapateira the site near Vila Real de Santo António, at the other end of the Algarve?▾
No. Every diving-specific source names this site on the district's west coast, in Aljezur municipality, inside the Vicentine Coast Natural Park. A different, unrelated place also called Carrapateira sits at the Algarve's eastern end, near Vila Real de Santo António, and no dive site is associated with it.
Do you reach Carrapateira by kayak from the coastline, or by dive boat?▾
Both, for what look like two different parts of the same site. The shallow 1-14m section is reached by kayak or from the coastline; the deeper canyon route, cited elsewhere at up to around 16m, is a weather-permitting boat trip, with no access mode stated for that section. Which one applies depends on which part of the site is on the plan, not on one fixed answer.
Is Carrapateira a beginner dive, or does it need Advanced Open Water?▾
Both readings exist, for what looks like two sections of one site, not one contested number. The shallow 1-14m section is graded Beginner by the operator that runs it that way; the deeper route through the canyon, cited elsewhere at up to around 16m, is better matched to Advanced Open Water, both for the depth and for the site's weather-exposed current.
How strong is the current at Carrapateira?▾
The current comes off an exposed Atlantic headland known for a fast southbound flow, strong enough historically to have wrecked ships along this stretch of coast. Every operator that runs this dive treats conditions, not a fixed schedule, as the deciding factor.
