About

Season Challenge is a PADI 5-Star IDC Dive Resort based at Marina Pero de Teive in Ponta Delgada, pairing a standard PADI dive programme with a broader Azores nature-tourism offer: guided whale and dolphin watching, snorkelling over volcanic rock formations, and guided hiking through Sao Miguel's forests and volcanic landscapes sit alongside its courses and boat dives.

It runs the island's course ladder from Open Water Diver through Divemaster, with a Deep Diving specialty and Nitrox training among the options. The daily programme is a double boat dive, 08:00 to 13:00, with a surface interval built around coffee, tea and cookies rather than a quick tank swap.

Offshore, the centre markets trips to Formigas Islets, the Dollabarat reefs, and a handful of named banks (Sabrina, Lourencos and Baixa do Ambrosio), which it markets as manta-ray sightings, the same offshore cluster two other Ponta Delgada operators also visit. Divers can book directly online, and staff typically work in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.

What divers say

Season Challenge's reviews run positive for years, with certification training singled out more than any one dive site: several reviewers credit patient instruction on the Open Water and Advanced Open Water courses specifically, alongside praise for safety and organisation on the daily boat trips. A wide range of individual staff members turn up by name over several years, guides, a skipper and instructors alike, reading as a sizeable team, not one or two names doing all the work. The one exception is a single, several-years-old account of a rushed, poorly equipped dive with an older instructor; nothing else repeats it. Marine life mentioned in reviews, including triggerfish, octopus, moray eels, groupers and what reviewers call manta rays, matches the offshore trips the centre itself advertises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Season Challenge train divers with disabilities?▾

The centre once ran a dedicated Disabled Divers International (DDI) service page marketing itself as the island's only DDI-trained team, a claim that does not hold up: at least two other Sao Miguel dive centres also list DDI-trained staff. DDI itself, the certifying body, stopped issuing certifications at the end of 2024, so no dive centre on the island currently holds an active DDI accreditation. Anyone with a disability or a medical condition wanting to dive should contact Season Challenge directly to talk through what is realistic before booking.

Why are Season Challenge's prices different on PADI's website than on its own site?▾

Season Challenge prices its own courses and dives in euros, with a double boat dive at EUR 96, for instance, and an Open Water Diver course at EUR 450. A third-party booking platform lists the same products in US dollars, at a mark-up over those direct prices. Booking directly with Season Challenge gets the centre's own euro price.

Can I book whale watching, snorkelling or a hike with Season Challenge without diving?▾

Yes. Alongside its dive programme, the centre runs guided whale and dolphin watching, snorkelling trips over volcanic rock formations, and guided hikes through Sao Miguel's forests and volcanic landscapes, all bookable as standalone activities.

Are there any safety concerns reported about diving with Season Challenge?▾

One older review describes a rushed dive with poor equipment under an instructor not named in any other account; nothing else repeats it, across a run of five-star reviews written years apart into 2026. That reads as an isolated report, not a pattern.

Which local dive sites does Season Challenge visit besides the Dori wreck?▾

Season Challenge also names two further local sites close to the Dori wreck, called 'The Anchors' and 'Willy Wonka', plus 'Caloura Arches' further along the coast toward Vila Franca do Campo; these are specific to this centre's own account, not the wider destination's published site list.

Are the 'manta rays' Season Challenge advertises at its offshore sites actually manta rays?▾

Season Challenge's own marketing, echoed by some reviewers, calls the rays seen around Formigas, Dollabarat and the nearby banks manta rays, but that identification is not independently confirmed. Diving around the Azores is documented mainly for devil rays, and true manta rays are, at best, rare visitors this far into the Atlantic. Anyone booking specifically to see a true manta ray should treat the sighting as possible, not guaranteed.
