About

Best Spot Azores runs from a kiosk at Marina Pero de Teive in Ponta Delgada, the main port town on Sao Miguel, and holds an SSI Instructor Training Center and Freediving Center accreditation, a PADI Dive Resort recognition, an Aqualung Partner Center listing and a Project AWARE partnership. Its review volume runs well ahead of Sao Miguel's other officially listed dive centres.

The daily programme is boat-based: guided dives, run in groups of up to six divers, to dive spots near Ponta Delgada that include Prison Break and Arco do Cavaco, among the roughly fifty spots the centre markets around the town, plus offshore expeditions out to the Formigas and Dollabarat seamounts and a site it calls a "Mobulas Hot Spot" for mobula rays, sharks and other big fish. Those offshore trips need a minimum of eight divers and settled sea conditions to run. A pool or confined-bay Try Scuba introduction leads straight into a free Basic Diver Certification for anyone diving for the first time.

Beyond recreational diving, the centre runs a professional-level course track from Divemaster to Assistant Instructor.

A separate freediving programme runs daily morning departures plus a basic freediver certification course, pitched at families: no competition, no records, no spearfishing, with insurance and equipment included.

A linked holiday-apartment business a few minutes away is marketed as a nearby place to stay.

What divers say

The SS Dori wreck, moray eel and octopus sightings on the standard boat dives, and offshore encounters with mobula rays, dolphins and whales, are the highlights reviewers repeat most often, with individual guides credited by name for patience and clear safety briefings. Small-group instruction is another recurring theme. A local resident and a visiting diver both single out this centre by name when asked for a Sao Miguel recommendation, the diver praising a careful, well-organised approach to safety on the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the professional-level SSI Dive Guide course cost here?▾

The centre's own SSI Dive Guide course, pitched at the Divemaster-to-Assistant-Instructor track for aspiring dive professionals, is listed from 700 EUR. It is the only guided course with a published price; recreational course fees, guided fun dives and equipment rental are not published and are quoted on request.

Is the freediving programme here suitable for a first-timer, or only for trained freedivers?▾

It is pitched as a family activity: the centre's own description rules out competition, records and spearfishing. Daily morning departures and a basic freediver certification course both include insurance and full equipment, from 55 EUR.

What do I get from a Try Scuba dive here if I have never dived before?▾

A pool or confined-bay introduction that, on completion, earns a free Basic Diver Certification by the centre's own description. It is aimed at first-time divers; a certified diver wanting to go straight to a boat dive should ask about the standard guided dive.

Why does the offshore trip to Formigas and Dollabarat need a minimum group size?▾

The centre only runs the offshore trip, which also covers a site it markets for mobula rays and sharks, with a minimum of eight divers and suitable sea conditions; below that threshold, or in poor conditions, the trip does not go out. Divers wanting the offshore day should check group numbers and weather before travelling.

How many divers are in a guided group on a standard boat dive?▾

Up to six divers per guide, by the centre's own description of its boat dives.

Can I book a dive online, or do I need to contact the centre directly?▾

There is no online booking engine. Every product on the centre's site routes to a contact form or a direct enquiry, and none can be booked instantly.
