Baixa de Santa Catarina
Offshore black-coral wall off Água de Pena, Madeira, dropping from about 13m past an agreed 40m maximum that runs deeper still on one operator's own figures, current-exposed and rated for advanced divers.

The dive
A rock wall drops from about 13 metres to an agreed 40 metres, some 500 metres off Água de Pena on Madeira's south-east coast, its face wrapped in black coral for the whole descent. One account describes a route past a landmark rock thick with anemones as the wall commits to its deepest section, with a rock platform partway down, around 25 metres. Ornate wrasse and damselfish work the shallower water above the wall, and reports describe a black moray eel and cleaner shrimp lower down, near the sand at the base. Current builds with distance from shore, strong enough that both dive centres running the site treat it as a drift rather than a static profile, and pelagic fish pass through on the strength of that same exposure.
What makes it special
Black coral wraps this wall for its whole run, from the shallow rock at 13 metres down to the agreed 40 metre maximum, a species documented at only a handful of locations on Madeira. The distance from shore is what shapes the rest of the dive: current runs here more often than on the island's sheltered stretches, a factor serious enough to set the site's advanced grading, and it is what draws the pelagic fish passing through.
Know before you go
Both dive centres that run this site frame it as requiring genuine experience and label it "AOWD level," though the wall's known depth already runs past Advanced Open Water's training range and into Deep Diver territory. Exactly how deep the wall goes is not fully settled: one operator's own figures place it deeper still, so confirm your certification against the day's actual plan, not just the advertised level. A single reading for this site puts the water on the colder side, 12 to 18°C, noticeably below Madeira's typical range; pack for the lower end until that reading is independently confirmed.
Why Dive Baixa de Santa Catarina
What makes this dive site stand out.

- AOWD label, Deep-diver depth
Rated AOWD by both operators though the 40m maximum needs Deep training
Depth & Profile
Conditions & difficulty
Area-wide guidance, not a figure specific to this site: calmer seas and warmer water are generally reported for these months across Madeira.
Both operators that name this site grade it 'AOWD level'. The shallower wall-top stretch sits within Advanced Open Water range, but the agreed 40m maximum is beyond Advanced Open Water's own 30m training limit and calls for a Deep Diver specialty or equivalent (see the depth FAQ for the deeper, unresolved figure some pages give).
Summary
Current exposure and a maximum depth beyond the operators' own 'AOWD level' label call for genuine advanced experience.
Safety considerations
What can go wrong here, and what divers do about it. Conditions change - take the briefing from the operator on the day.
- Current: Frequent currents linked to the site's distance from shoreDive as a guided group; treat AOWD or above as the practical minimum, as both operators recommend
- Depth: The wall's agreed maximum already runs past Advanced Open Water's training range, and one operator's own figures place it deeper stillConfirm your own certification covers the planned depth before booking; the site's advertised level alone is not the final word
Marine Life
Rules and permits
- Conduct: no touching, no taking anything, no disturbing wildlife.
Diving with scuba or a scooter to watch marine mammals or turtles is prohibited, unless for authorised science or filming; a chance meeting is not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Advanced Open Water cover the whole wall at Baixa de Santa Catarina, given its 'AOWD level' billing?▾
Partly. The wall's shallower stretch, from about 13 metres down through the black coral, sits comfortably within Advanced Open Water range. The two dive centres that name this site agree the wall's stated maximum reaches 40 metres, past Advanced Open Water's own training range and into Deep Diver territory. Treat the 'AOWD level' label as covering the upper wall, not the full descent.
Is the wall's true maximum depth 40 metres or 50 metres?▾
Both figures come from the same operator's own page: its written description agrees with the second dive centre naming this site on a 40 metre maximum, but a separate stat block on that same page states 50 metres instead, ten metres deeper. Two independently written descriptions agree on 40 metres, so that is the wall's working maximum; the 50 metre figure remains an unresolved outlier. If it holds, the full route would move past the standard Deep Diver recreational ceiling into technical-diving territory, so confirm with your operator which figure the day's plan is built around.
Is Baixa de Santa Catarina also known as Ilhéu Santa Catarina?▾
A single video description uses 'Ilhéu Santa Catarina' ('Santa Catarina Islet') for what is otherwise clearly this same dive, run by the same Caniçal-area operator. No dive centre or established record uses that name for the site, so treat it as an informal, one-off variant rather than an alternative name in circulation.
