Baixa da Cruz

A volcanic rock cone off Machico bay, Madeira: a sand base near 30-35m rising to a near-surface peak around 3-4m, with black coral and barracuda.

The dive

Black coral grows on the rock as divers work down a single volcanic cone off the bay of Machico, its peak near the surface above a sand base that operators place at slightly different depths further down. Partway down, a stand of whip coral takes over, a species more usually associated with warmer waters growing this far north. Barracuda pass along the flanks in loose schools, and rays often settle into the sand where the cone meets the bottom. Boats reach the site in about 25 minutes from Caniço de Baixo, heading east past Funchal's airport toward Machico.

What makes it special

Deeper on the cone, the whip coral is a species usually tied to warmer water than Madeira's, rare enough this far north that it is the site's own operator's headline description. The shallower stretch above carries its own coral cover down from the peak, and the same operator lists the dive for experienced divers only, run when wind and weather allow rather than on a fixed schedule.

Know before you go

Only dive Baixa da Cruz when your operator confirms conditions: it sits open to Atlantic swell off Machico and is pulled from the plan on marginal wind or weather days, so treat a booked slot here as tentative until the day's forecast is checked. Manta Diving Madeira and Haliotis both run boat trips here. Advanced Open Water reaches the shallow peak and the coral zone through about 20 metres; the full route to the sand base needs a Deep specialty or equivalent, and operators do not agree on exactly how deep that base runs. No marine-reserve status or permit fee applies at this site.

Safety considerations

What can go wrong here, and what divers do about it. Conditions change - take the briefing from the operator on the day.

  • Surface and boat traffic: Open-Atlantic exposure off Machico bay; the site is not always on the day's rotationConfirm with your operator that conditions are optimal before booking; the dive runs only in good wind and weather
  • Depth: The sand base sits close to or past the Advanced Open Water limit, depending on which operator's figure appliesStay on the shallower cone above 20-30m unless you hold a Deep specialty or equivalent

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Deep certification for Baixa da Cruz, or is Advanced Open Water enough?▾

Advanced Open Water reaches the upper cone comfortably, the peak at 3 to 4m down through the coral to about 20m. The sand base is the deciding factor: one dive centre's own listing puts it at approximately 30m, at the edge of Advanced Open Water's own limit, while another gives 35m, which calls for a Deep specialty or equivalent. Confirm which figure your operator is planning to before booking the full route.

Does the Garajau reserve fee apply at Baixa da Cruz?▾

No. Baixa da Cruz sits well east of the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve, on the Machico side of the island, and no marine-reserve or permit-fee designation covers it. The reserve fee some Madeira operators charge for other sites does not extend here.

Why isn't Baixa da Cruz always on the day's dive plan?▾

The site sits open to Atlantic swell off Machico, and operators only run it in settled wind and weather. Treat a booking here as conditions-dependent: ask your operator whether the forecast supports it before counting on the dive.
