About
Focus Natura runs from Ribeira da Boaventura in Santa Cruz, on Madeira's south-east coast near the airport. Pedro Vasconcelos and Hugo Silva, both instructor-level, co-lead the centre alongside Open Water Instructor Sara Fernandes; Focus Natura has operated since 2006. Every course runs on the SSI ladder, from the introductory Try Scuba through the recreational and specialty range to Divemaster, Dive Guide and an Open Water Instructor Training Course.
Diving here is boat-only: there is no shore-dive product, and four trips (the Bow Belle wreck, Ilhas Desertas, North Coast and the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira) need at least four divers booked to go ahead. The centre's own material names 23 dive locations along Madeira's south and east coasts, among them Ponta do Garajau's long-resident groupers, a current-swept wreck ground at Badajeira off Ponta de São Lourenço, and the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira itself, scuttled in 2018 off Cabo Girão.
Underwater photography runs through the centre's identity: it has organised and entered the European Underwater Photography and Video Championship and ran the first Madeira Open in the same discipline. It also states recognition as a diving centre for divers with disabilities.
What divers say
Reviews split into two registers. Most, spread from 2015 to 2026, are warm and specific: divers name Pedro, Hugo and Sara individually for putting them at ease, with one instructor credited for transferring underwater photos to a guest's phone before they were even out of the water. One account stands apart: a detailed 2023 report describes a panicking diver in rough conditions met with little reassurance from Hugo specifically, before Pedro and Sara stepped in and calmed things down. A second, older account describes a scheduling mismatch, booked for a single dive and placed on a double-tank trip instead. Both are single, uncorroborated reports, not a pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Focus Natura really have Madeira's only rebreather?▾
Focus Natura advertises itself as the only certified diving centre on Madeira equipped with a rebreather. No other Madeira operator's own material confirms or contests that, so it is the centre's own claim, not an independently verified one; if rebreather diving is the deciding factor in choosing a centre, confirm directly before booking.
Is there a minimum group size for Focus Natura's trips?▾
Most guided dives have no minimum, but four specific trips need at least four participants booked to run: the Bow Belle wreck, the Ilhas Desertas day trip, the North Coast route and the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira wreck. A solo diver or small group wanting one of these four should check ahead or look for a date when a larger group is already booked.
Can divers penetrate the Bow Belle wreck with Focus Natura?▾
Focus Natura's own guidance says no. The Bow Belle sank by accident, not as a deliberate scuttling, and the centre calls its structure unstable, so it does not advise going inside the hull on trips there.
How deep does the Baixa de Santa Catarina dive go?▾
Focus Natura advertises a maximum depth of 50 metres at this site, deeper than the ceiling of a standard SSI Deep Diving Specialty (40 metres), and names no separate certification requirement for diving there. The deeper sections call for technical-level training no matter what depth is quoted, so check with an instructor about what depth suits your certification before booking this one.
Is Focus Natura a good choice for underwater photographers?▾
Photography is a specific focus here: the centre has organised and taken part in the European Underwater Photography and Video Championship and ran the first Madeira Open in the same discipline. One underwater photographer recommends it for the freedom to dive your own plan rather than in a tightly marshalled group.
Can I rent boots from Focus Natura?▾
No. Mask, fins, snorkel, BCD, regulator, wetsuit and a nitrox fill are all available to rent, but the centre does not rent boots, citing hygiene reasons. Bring your own if your wetsuit needs them.
