The dive

A shot line drops straight onto the wreck at 39-42 metres, and the aircraft is unmistakable from the moment it comes into view: fuselage, both wings, tail assembly and twin engine nacelles, resting upright on open sand. The starboard engine still carries its bent propeller from the impact that brought the aircraft down; the port propeller is missing entirely. A few metres off, the rear fuselage lies detached and part-buried in sand, upside down, its own quiet stop within the same dive. Bottom time is short. At 42 metres the no-decompression limit on air runs to about ten minutes, so most divers work both sections of the airframe on one planned pass rather than lingering over either.

What makes it special

Most WWII aircraft losses off Malta ended in scattered wreckage. This one didn't. It is one of only a handful of the island's aircraft wrecks that still reads as a plane rather than a debris field, with both wings and the tail assembly intact enough to recognise on sight. Malta's other deep aircraft wrecks run past 55 metres and call for full technical training; this one is the shallowest of that group, within reach of a deep-specialty recreational diver rather than a technical one. A genuine warplane that still looks like a warplane, reachable without trimix, is a rare combination in Malta's wreck inventory.

History and origin

On 13 December 1941, five Bristol Blenheim light bombers of No. 18 Squadron flew out of Luqa on a raid against shipping at Argostoli, on the Greek island of Kefalonia. One aircraft, serial Z7858, took fighter fire on the return leg. The attack knocked out the port engine and shot away its propeller. With Luqa's landing path blocked by another aircraft, pilot Sergeant Frank Jury spotted a Maltese fishing boat off Delimara and put the Blenheim down beside it. This is a sober story. All three crew, Jury, navigator Sergeant Thomas Black and wireless operator Sergeant Dennis Mortimer, came through the ditching, two with minor head injuries, and were taken aboard the fishing boat before being ferried on to the Kalafrana seaplane base. The wreck itself now falls under Maltese legislation protecting underwater cultural heritage, the same kind of legal protection applied to a historic wreck's structure and artefacts, distinct from a marine nature reserve.

Know before you go

No shelter from surface swell out here. Poor weather can close the site out entirely. Reaching it comfortably calls for more than a base Advanced Open Water card. Several Malta operators set a minimum of Deep Diver Specialty or Tec 40, given the depth and the short bottom time. Stay off the airframe. Its structure has weakened with age, and general fuselage entry is not advised, though a trained, equipped diver can look into the cockpit itself. Marine growth on the fuselage is unremarkable rather than a headline draw here. This is a history dive first.
