About Scuba Life Malta

Simon Hewart and Jacqui Hedley founded Scuba Life Malta in 2017 from a base in Mellieħa, on Malta's northwest tip, near the Cirkewwa shore-diving hub. Day-to-day running has since passed to co-owners Janie Helgesson and Mattias Ljungberg, with Simon and Jacqui still teaching courses and diving alongside the team. Lisa Corbett, a Master Scuba Diver Trainer and BSAC instructor, joined in 2024. It's a PADI 5-Star Centre, MTA-licensed to operate in Malta.

The centre runs shore and boat dives across the Malta mainland wreck circuit, with Gozo and Comino trips available as add-ons. Courses span the full PADI ladder from Bubble Maker through Divemaster, plus specialties in sidemount, wreck, nitrox and underwater photography. Package pricing for guided dives runs from a single two-dive pack up to a ten-dive block, with full-equipment or tanks-and-weights-only options at each tier.

The centre describes its own approach as small groups and unhurried pacing rather than high-volume tourism diving. That framing shows up in practice: instructors are named individually and consistently across guest reviews spanning different months, rather than a large rotating staff list.

What Divers Say

Recent reviews cluster around three things. First, named-staff warmth: the same handful of instructors, including Janie, Mattias, Simon, Jacqui and dive guide Rosie, are credited by name across independent reviewers writing months apart. Second, course completion satisfaction, with divers specifically calling out wreck, nitrox and advanced open water training as well taught. Third, the small-team feel the centre markets itself on: reviewers describe multi-day stays where the same instructors handled their entire certification path, from first briefing through final dive.

One reviewer summed up a multi-course stay as organised, patient and professional, adding they would dive with the team again. Another completed a wreck specialty and nitrox certification across five fun dives in the same trip and called the knowledge and helpfulness hard to fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Scuba Life Malta a good choice for a first-time try dive?

Yes. The centre runs Bubble Maker for children from age 8 and PADI Discover Scuba Diving for adults, both taught in small groups by the same core instructor team. Reviewers consistently mention patient, unhurried briefings for complete beginners.

Does Scuba Life Malta only dive Malta's wrecks, or does it also go to Gozo and Comino?

Both. The centre's home base is Mellieħa on the northwest tip of Malta, close to the Cirkewwa shore-diving hub, but it also runs day trips to Gozo (for a per-day supplement) and Comino.

Who will actually guide my dives at Scuba Life Malta?

A small, stable team rather than a rotating roster: co-owners Janie Helgesson and Mattias Ljungberg, founders Simon Hewart and Jacqui Hedley (who remain active instructors), and Lisa Corbett, who joined the team in 2024. Reviews name the same handful of guides across different months, which matches a small-group operating model.

Can I do multiple certifications back to back with Scuba Life Malta?

Reviewers describe multi-day stays combining Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Nitrox over a single trip, and combo packages (OW plus AOW, with or without a night dive) are priced as a bundle rather than booked separately.

Is Scuba Life Malta suitable for technical or sidemount training?

It offers a Sidemount Diver specialty alongside standard PADI Nitrox and Wreck Diver courses, aimed at recreational divers wanting to extend their skills rather than full technical certification.

How does Scuba Life Malta compare to larger dive operators in the area?

It positions itself explicitly around small groups and unhurried pacing rather than volume throughput. Reviews describe named-instructor relationships and multi-day course completions rather than one-off drop-in dives, consistent with a smaller, family-run model.
