The dive

A short surface swim from the beach drops you straight into a large volcanic chamber, wide enough that the entrance light still reaches you at first. From there, tunnels branch off in several directions, some running up to 70 metres back into the rock. This isn't a single-file passage: pick a route with your guide, torch on, and follow the tube as it narrows and widens through the dark. In one section, fresh water mixing with salt creates a halocline you can genuinely surface into, a small air pocket inside solid rock. The floor is loose pebbles and fine sand, so the group's fin placement matters more than the depth gauge does. Most of the dive sits comfortably under 13 metres. It stays that way from entry to exit.

This is one of the largest recreational-diveable caves in the Canary Islands, and it earns its name from what's inside rather than how deep it goes. Brain-shaped Corallistes sponges cluster along the tube walls, folded and convoluted enough that the resemblance is immediate, not a stretch of imagination. Few other sites in this cluster pair that kind of specific, photographable feature with a shore entry anyone can reach on foot. Know before you go

Bring a torch and expect to use it; without one, the branching tunnels beyond the main chamber are simply off-limits. Buoyancy is the real skill test, not depth. Stir the sandy floor and the whole group loses visibility for the rest of the dive, so trim and control matter more here than anywhere shallow usually demands. Afternoons bring the best light through the entrance, worth timing your trip around if photography is part of the plan. Check for ground swell before entering from the beach; the cave itself is calm, but the surface approach isn't always.
