Entre Montes

Also known as: Baía de Entre Montes

A sheltered volcanic-wall bay five minutes off Horta, Faial, dived from 6-20m for night dives, photography and try-dives below Monte da Guia.

The dive

The wall below Monte da Guia starts at six metres and works down through boulders and crevices to a sandy floor that averages about fifteen, with some routes running to twenty and one operator's own figure placing the lowest point close to twenty-two. Moray eels and common octopus den in the wall's holes, hermit crabs and nudibranchs work the lower rock, and jewel anemones colour the crevices red and violet. Out on the sand, common stingrays cruise past, pearly razorfish flick along the bottom, and red mullet and flatfish work the open ground; a dusky grouper turns up here from time to time. Seahorses are reported too, but only now and then: treat a sighting as a bonus, not a promise.

What makes it special

Entre Montes is built for repetition: the same sheltered wall works as a night dive, a photography outing and a first try-dive without changing character, which is why the official Azores dive directory markets all three from the one site. The name itself comes from dry land: "Entre Montes" is also the isthmus and dune system that ties Monte da Guia to the rest of Faial, and a hiking trail across it carries the same name. The dive borrows the name from that feature and sits right alongside it, at the foot of the same volcanic peninsula.

Know before you go

Tell your operator up front which version you're booking, since the two look identical from the boat: a night dive or try-dive stays shallow and supervised whatever your certification, while working the wall down through the boulders to the sandy floor is graded for Advanced Open Water divers only. Its shelter and modest depth make it a natural pick for a first night dive: calm water, no current to fight, and slow residents like morays and octopus that hold still under a torch. That same shelter is also why timing a visit here comes down to your operator's schedule more than the calendar.

The site's own depth runs past Open Water's 18m ceiling, so an Advanced Open Water card covers the independently-dived route; the same wall is also booked at a shallower, supervised level with no independent depth limit at all, as a non-certified try-dive with night diving and photography built in

Sheltered and calm throughout; the deeper, independently-dived sections call for Advanced Open Water, while supervised try-dives stay in the shallow, easy range near the entry

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a diver with no certification try Entre Montes?▾

Yes, but not the full dive: the official Azores dive directory markets Entre Montes for supervised, non-certified try-dives and night diving, a shallow experience kept well within safe limits. Working the fuller 6-20m route independently, down to a reported 22m on some dives, is a separate booking, and it calls for an Advanced Open Water card because the depth runs past what the Open Water course covers.

Why does the official Azores dive directory call it 'Baía de Entre Montes'?▾

That is the fuller, official form of the same name. The Azores government's own diving directory lists the site as 'Baía de Entre Montes', while local operators simply call it 'Entre Montes'. Both name the same dive; there is no separate site and no rename involved.
