CW Azores
SSI dive centre and whale-watching operator at Madalena marina, Pico, running shark, Princess Alice Bank and coastal diving from four boats.
Also known as: Baixa da Princesa Alice, Banco Princesa Alice, Princesa Alice, Princess Alice Seamount
Offshore Azores seamount 45-50 nmi southwest of Faial and Pico, its pinnacle top at 29-35m in open blue water, dived for mobula ray aggregations.
Last updated October 2026

The descent is the part people remember first: a shot or anchor line dropping through open Atlantic blue, light shifting around it, until the top of the seamount takes shape below at somewhere between 29 and 35 metres. Most of the dive happens on or near that line. Divers hang at the pinnacle top or above it and watch the water column, because the devil rays can pass at any depth, sometimes close to the surface. Currents run moderate to strong and change from day to day, so the line is the reference for the whole hour; held on it, the dive itself can be calm, and the effort lies in the crossing and the current. Below the top the bank keeps falling past a thousand metres, and the ascent brings the colours back as the light returns.
Sicklefin devil rays (Mobula tarapacana), sold locally as giant mobulas, gather over this pinnacle in groups of 20 to 40, with wingspans reaching about four metres. On a good day they cruise around the line in loose formation while almaco jacks and schools of barracuda work the same water. That encounter is why many divers come to Faial and Pico at all: the bank is the trip the rest of the itinerary is built around, booked as a day of its own between coastal dives on the other days. In late August and September a whale shark occasionally turns up as well, though less often than at Ambrosio off Santa Maria.
Treat this as a full day at sea in open ocean that can be rough, and expect the weather to move or cancel the departure. Every operator runs a check dive with you before the trip, so plan a day with them ahead of the bank day. The bank is a total-protection marine reserve: diving needs the park authority's permit and nothing may be taken. Practise holding position on a line in moving water before you go, because the whole dive is spent hanging in the current, in open water all the way down.

Priced as its own expedition day, from EUR 250 to EUR 350 a diver depending on operator, with a separate check-dive fee at one; another sells a EUR 499 package that includes preparation dives.
Each operator sets its own gate: DiveAzores asks for AOW plus 30 logged dives, CW Azores AOW plus 50, Divers Club Azores an advanced certification or 50 logged dives, and Pico Island Adventures takes buoyancy-certified 1-star divers on its 15m option and deep specialty holders to 42m. Every operator requires a check dive with them first.

Plan on most of the day. Operators quote about two to two and a half hours each way from Horta, Madalena or Lajes do Pico, the official Azores dive directory gives 180 minutes from Horta, and several divers describe three to four hours. Either way the two crossings take far longer than the diving, and poor weather can delay or cancel the trip.
On a good day groups of 20 to 40 sicklefin devil rays cruise around the line. Some divers have made the long trip and seen none, finding dolphins and a huge barracuda school in their place, and one reached the bank after years of waiting to find the water murky. Treat the rays as likely in season and never as promised.
With one operator, yes. Divers Club Azores takes either an advanced certification or 50 logged dives, while DiveAzores wants Advanced Open Water plus 30 logged dives and CW Azores Advanced Open Water plus 50. Pico Island Adventures sorts divers by trip: its shallower mid-water option to 15m is open to 1-star divers certified in buoyancy, and its 42m dive needs a deep specialty. All of them run a check dive with you first. Some experienced divers urge newcomers to wait: a 20-dive Advanced diver who asked about the site was advised to build more experience before going.
The packages differ. CW Azores charges EUR 250 with tanks, weights, guide and a packed lunch, DiveAzores EUR 300, and Divers Club Azores EUR 350 plus EUR 60 for the required check dive. Pico Island Adventures sells EUR 499 for two preparation dives and two dives at the bank, with EUR 99 off for experienced divers.
