Pontao 16
Also known as: Pontao 16, Pontoon 16
A barge deliberately sunk off Horta in 2003, an artificial-reef wreck at 19-26m thick with white seabream and grey triggerfish.

The dive
Pontão 16 is a working platform, deliberately sunk in 2003 to build a dive site: a barge forty metres long and seventeen wide, resting on sand about ten minutes by boat from Horta harbour. Divers circle the exterior between roughly nineteen and twenty-six metres; the structure cannot be penetrated, so the route stays outside the hull throughout. White seabream crowd the metal densely enough to be the first thing named on the structure, and large schools of grey triggerfish move over the same iron. Round stingrays and Atlantic lizardfish work the sand beyond the hull, with the odd wide-eyed flounder lying flat nearby.
What makes it special
What sets Pontão 16 apart from a historic wreck is intent: a working platform, placed here deliberately in 2003, and it shows in how cleanly life has claimed the hull, without the scattered debris of a wreck that went down by accident. White seabream crowd the structure densely enough to define it, and the site is rated well for underwater photography, a result of how thickly life has taken to the iron.
Know before you go
Control buoyancy near the structure and keep hands off it; the remnant metalwork is not soft. Advanced Open Water is the practical entry point here, driven by depth alone since current stays mild throughout the dive. Divers can expect the warm-water peak from June to October, with the coolest water and reduced operations over winter.

Depth & Profile
Conditions & difficulty
Every source that grades this dive puts it at Advanced Open Water, driven by the depth-plus-open-water profile, not by current or overhead risk; the whole route stays within AOW's 30m ceiling, so no deeper specialty is needed.
Summary
By depth and current alone this sits in the moderate band, but every source that names a level calls it Advanced-only, so a newly certified AOW diver should not treat the grading as excessive caution.
Safety considerations
What can go wrong here, and what divers do about it. Conditions change - take the briefing from the operator on the day.
- Overhead: The barge cannot be penetratedKeep to the exterior circuit; do not attempt entry
- Depth: The dive sits between about 19 and 26m, past what Open Water training coversConfirm recent depth experience in this range before booking; this is not a first deep dive

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the site called 'Pontão 16' in some places and 'Pontoon 16' in others?▾
Both names refer to the same barge. 'Pontão 16' is the Portuguese form; 'Pontoon 16' is an English rendering one Horta-based operator uses on its own site. Neither is a different structure or a different dive.
