The dive starts on the cliff. Concrete steps cut down through the trees to a ramp at the water, and the shops that sell this site warn about walking them in full kit. About eight metres out the reef flat begins, one to three metres deep, hard coral with clownfish and butterflyfish over it. Then it stops.

The wall top sits at three to five metres and the face falls vertically to 25 or 30, onto a sandy slope at around 40. The shoal, when it is in, holds right on that lip, so groups usually meet it on the way down instead of going to look for it. Jacks cut through the ball. Needlefish wait at the surface above it.

Below the lip the dive changes. Soft coral, sponges and fans cover the face, giant frogfish sit against sponge texture, and overhangs and cuts run the length of it. When the current is up this becomes a drift, and guides set it to go with the water. Technical divers invert the whole profile, dropping past 55 metres and running their stops back up the face into the shallows.

Look up from fifteen metres here and you may find a freediver hanging on a line above you, snorkellers past that, and somebody in mid-air off the cliff platform. The same stretch of water carries all of them, and everyone can see everyone else. A freediving school has worked it since 2015, which is why the training lines are permanent, and depth championships have been held on it.

The geometry is what allows it. Depth arrives immediately, with 25 metres a few kicks from the ramp and 80 within 100 metres of the shore, but the fish stay at the top of the wall, not out in blue water. A snorkeller on one breath and a diver at fifteen metres are looking at the same animal from opposite sides.

Your ascent is somebody else's descent.

Napaling has no wreck and no legend. What it has is the short history of a place that got found. A freediving school arrived in 2015, when the site was still difficult to reach and even locals were unsure of the way in. The airport opened on the island in late 2018 and the shops followed, and the cliff top now carries a car park, a warden's hut, tables and hammocks.

The cost of that arrived on the public record twice in one year. In January 2025 reef rangers reported corals here broken by divers who had stood on them, and the provincial governor promised legal action1. That November a diver found a living table coral with the words "Just Dive" carved into it, and the municipal government, the environment department and the provincial environment office were all ordered to investigate2.

Wide angle earns its place twice over: the ball against open water at three metres, and the coloured face behind it. The Napaling Crack is the set piece, a cave-like cut about ten metres from top to bottom that shoots well from five or six metres down, so the frame costs no depth at all. Get in early. By mid morning the same shot has snorkellers in the top of it.

Go early. Between seven and nine the surface is flat, the visibility is at its best and the shoal sits closer to the wall. The vans arrive later.

A fee is collected at the hut before you go down and it is not optional. No published schedule sets it, so ask what the payment covers, and if you came on a package, ask what that already includes.

Do not surface under the jump platform. People come off the cliff into the water directly above the shoal, and the shoal is where your ascent naturally puts you. Come up away from it, and send a marker before you break the surface outside the cordoned section, where the freediving lines are.

Buoyancy here is a live issue, not a formality. The flat is shallow, close in and busy, and it is easy to end up standing on it without meaning to. Hover, and keep off the wall face as well.

Decide your floor on the steps, not on the wall. The rock will not give you one, and everything this site is known for sits above eighteen metres.

The hospital to know is Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Medical Center in Tagbilaran, about half an hour away by road, which runs a named emergency department. The nearest chamber to plan around is off Bohol entirely. As of February 2025 the country had three working ones, in Manila, at Mandaue City on Cebu and at Puerto Princesa in Palawan3, which puts the closest about 87 kilometres north across the strait. Carry cover that pays for the evacuation and confirm the current position with your operator on the day.
