About
Buceo Norte is an SSI Instructor Training Center at Puerto de Sardina, a small harbour in Gáldar on Gran Canaria's northwest coast. It calls its approach Buceo Consciente, conscious diving, and builds both teaching and guiding around it.
Two named instructor trainers lead the training side. Marina Muñoz Gonzalo is a Basic Freediving Instructor Trainer and a biology graduate, and Pío David Vargas Martos is an Open Water Instructor Trainer. The centre advertises itself as the first in Gran Canaria with the SSI Diamond certification and the only one on the island with an instructor of instructors.
The easiest dives start on foot from the second pier of Sardina. The shore routes there run from 10 to 18 m, most are listed for all levels, and La Cuevita at 10 m is the shallowest. The centre lists angel shark, seahorse and trumpetfish among the animals, and an 18 m night dive for advanced divers. Further along, Caleta de Abajo has advanced shore dives between 18 and 27 m, among them El ojo de Tamaran, entered through an L-shaped blowhole tube.
The boat dives are the ones divers repeat to each other. Pecio El Arona, a wreck about 100 m long and 15 m wide, lies at 35 m and Pecio El Coreano at 36 m. A DC3 aircraft wreck known as Zorro33 sits at 29 m in strong current, and La Cueva de los Chuchos, a cave at 15 m, is also reached by boat.
Courses begin with the Bautizo de Buceo try dive and continue through Open Water, Advanced, Stress & Rescue and specialities, with SSI Explorers for children and freediving and snorkelling programmes alongside. The shop rents buoyancy jackets, regulators and computers and fills air cylinders.
What divers say
Many reviews come from try-dive and first-course divers, and they single out patient instruction. Reviewers describe small groups that are never hurried underwater, and they tie the centre's conscious-diving phrase to respect for the marine environment and to safety. A company group spent a try-dive day here, and one returning diver began by renting cylinders. One review from October 2025 says the rental equipment needs urgent renovation, and another from January 2026 calls the rental equipment in very good condition.

How deep are the wrecks, and who can dive them?▾
The centre lists Pecio El Coreano at 36 m and Pecio El Arona, a wreck about 100 m long and 15 m wide, at 35 m, both reached by boat, with El Arona rated advanced. A DC3 aircraft wreck known as Zorro33 lies at 29 m, also by boat, and the centre lists its current as strong. Both ships sit deeper than the 30 m an Advanced Open Water certification covers, so ask the centre which qualification it asks for before you book.
Which dives are from the shore and which from a boat?▾
The Sardina del Norte routes start from the second pier of Sardina and are shore dives. Caleta de Abajo and the El Cabrón routes are shore entries too, with equipment carried to the water, and La gran Gerardia (30 m, advanced) is also entered from the shore. The wrecks and La Cueva de los Chuchos, a 15 m cave on the east coast, are dived from a boat.
What does conscious diving mean in practice?▾
It is the centre's own name for its approach: respect for the marine environment, safety taken seriously and groups that are not rushed. Reviewers repeat the phrase on their own when they describe their dives.
Where does a first-time or newly certified diver start?▾
The Sardina del Norte routes are listed for all levels, with La Cuevita at 10 m the shallowest, and the centre also runs the Bautizo de Buceo try dive for people who have never breathed underwater. The Caleta de Abajo shore dives and the night dive are listed as advanced.
Does the centre dive the east coast as well?▾
Yes. Its programme includes the Agüimes and Telde zone: El Arco del Cabrón at 26 m and La gran Gerardia at 30 m are advanced, Tufia is intermediate with a physical equipment carry, and Risco Verde is listed as a relaxed dive for all levels.
