About
Discovery Divers has run from the Amari Koh Samui Resort in North Chaweng since 1999, describing itself as the island's longest-operating dive shop. Owner Eric Vinik and General Manager Richie, with the centre for about 23 years, anchor a team of roughly fifteen instructors, divemasters, drivers and captains from Thailand, France, the UK, China, Slovakia and the Dominican Republic. The centre's longevity claim gets unusual outside backing: a 2005 online post named a manager called Richie running a shop at the bottom end of Chaweng beach, and a 2012 post named an "Eric V" connected to the centre. The two mentions are independent, years apart, and line up with the names the centre gives today.
The centre owns three named speedboats, Stoli, Weevarin and Discovery, which it says makes it one of the few Samui-based operators running its own fleet instead of chartering. That fleet carries day trips out to Sail Rock and Chumphon Pinnacle, plus a cluster of sites split between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan district (Southwest Pinnacle, White Rock, Mango Bay, Green Rock, Shark Island, Japanese Garden and Twin Peaks). Koh Samui's own local reefs inside Ang Thong Marine Park, Hin Yippon and Ko Wao, sit outside this list. Instructors get named individually and repeatedly across reviews: Filip, Mann, Pierre, Zoe, Otilio, Margaux, Joe and Gustavo all turn up, matching people on the centre's own team page. That is specific praise, not a generic nod to "the staff." Small groups, hotel-pickup logistics and the boats themselves are steady secondary themes.
Complaints cluster on price and transport. One 2026 account described a transport surcharge added after a deposit had already been paid, and a separate account disputed underwater visibility on a snorkeling trip, which the centre's own reply attributed to weather and tide. Community threads spanning 2005 to 2025 return to one recurring note alongside the praise: a well-regarded operator that costs more than basing dives directly out of Koh Tao.
