About
Alongside its dive shop at Marina de Vila Franca do Campo, on Sao Miguel's south coast, Espirito Azul runs an affiliated multi-day liveaboard catamaran, Water and Wind, and a guest house, a combination none of Sao Miguel's other three directory-listed centres offers. Owner Carlos Paulos, a veterinary-medicine graduate who has lived in the Azores since 2001, skippers the catamaran himself and leads baptism dives at the shop; Joana Paulos, the boats' local skipper, handles bookings for both the dive centre and the guest house.
The day-to-day product is a large local rotation: 28 named spots along the south coast, reached in seven to twenty-five minutes by fast boat, with a morning departure at 9am and an afternoon one at 2pm most days. Some of the walls in that rotation go down to 40 metres, for divers with the certification to use them. Beyond the coast, the centre runs the same offshore programme as its Sao Miguel neighbours: trips to the Formigas and Dollabarat seamounts and a separate Ambrosio excursion built around manta encounters, with a minimum of one prior dive with the centre required first. A five-person team carries instructor cards across SSI, PADI, SDI/TDI, CMAS, DDI and DAN, and courses run on the SSI ladder from entry level through Master Diver and a long specialty slate.
What divers say
Reviewers draw a line here that reviews of other Sao Miguel centres mostly do not: local day-boat diving is fun and well run, but the real highlights of an Azores trip, in one diver's account, belong to the liveaboard or the offshore excursions rather than the regular south-coast rotation. Set against that, safety-minded, name-checked guiding recurs across the wider review base: one instructor is credited for reassuring a diver with autism through a refresher dive, another for a nervous first-timer's French-speaking welcome, and the owner himself for leading baptism dives personally. The one friction point on record is a single cancelled pool session for a family booking, resolved the same day with a sea dive instead, with no lasting complaint attached.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many local dive sites does Espirito Azul cover, and how far are they by boat?▾
The centre's own map names 28 spots along Sao Miguel's south coast, reached by boat in seven to twenty-five minutes. Two departures run most days, a morning dive at 9am and an afternoon dive at 2pm, each outing lasting about three hours including the boat ride.
Do Espirito Azul's local dives suit newer divers, or are they mostly for the experienced?▾
The centre's own site puts some local walls at depths up to 40 metres, reserved for divers with the experience and certification to dive them. The wider 28-site rotation spans arches, boulder fields and reef walls of varying profiles, going by the dive-spot names on the centre's own map.
Does Espirito Azul run a liveaboard, or is all its diving day boats from the marina?▾
Alongside its day-boat programme, Espirito Azul is affiliated with a separate multi-day liveaboard catamaran, Water and Wind, skippered by the centre's own owner, Carlos Paulos, sailing routes around several Azores islands. One diver's 2023 account put the all-inclusive, per-person price (alcohol aside) at around EUR 2,700; that single, several-year-old figure is not the centre's own published rate.
What do I need to book the Formigas, Dollabarat or Ambrosio trips?▾
The centre requires at least one prior dive with it before taking divers on these offshore trips, a rule it states is for everyone's safety. Non-diving companions can usually join the same boat on a snorkelling or freediving basis instead of scuba.
What languages can I expect from the team at Espirito Azul?▾
The centre's own site toggles between Portuguese, English, French and German, and reviewers corroborate a French-speaking welcome for nervous first-timers; at least one crew member is also described as speaking English, Ukrainian, Russian, some German and Portuguese.
Is Espirito Azul rated as an SSI centre the way some other Sao Miguel operators are?▾
Its own course ladder runs on SSI, and its team carries instructor cards across SSI, PADI, SDI/TDI, CMAS, DDI and DAN. A separate business directory listing for the centre carries no star-level rating, unlike some neighbouring operators, and also lists shore dives among the centre's services, a detail its own priced products do not confirm; every dive it currently sells is boat-based.
