About
Madeira Divepoint has operated as a PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Center and Dive Resort, the only one on Madeira, since 1991, when diving was the company's first activity and one of the first dive operations on the island. It runs from the Pestana Hotel Madeira Carlton, on Funchal's south-coast oceanfront. The diving business now sits under a wider multi-activity brand, XpointMadeira, alongside boat tours, SUP, kayak and an announced e-bike hire, and the diving product itself has kept the Madeira Divepoint name throughout.
A private house reef sits directly off the hotel, its canyons and caves used for fun, night and educational dives to about 12 metres, and for a scooter dive that starts on the same reef and runs to 14 metres. Boat trips reach the Garajau Nature Park, protected since 1986 and known for its resident groupers; the twin pinnacles of T-Reef; the swim-through rock formation at Arena; and two wreck dives, the Corveta Afonso Cerqueira, a former Portuguese Navy frigate purpose-sunk south of Cabo Girão in 2018, and the Pronto, a 1929 cargo wreck on sand with Dusky Groupers that the centre lists at up to 32 metres. A second wreck, the Bowbelle, reaches that same 32-metre mark on the centre's own figures; both dives sit beyond the standard Open Water Advanced 30-metre recreational limit, so confirm specialty-certification requirements before booking either.
The PADI course ladder runs from Bubblemaker for children aged 8 and up through Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver, and certified divers who complete an EANx course or log four or more dives with the centre get Nitrox fills free. Snorkeling trips, whale and dolphin watching, and SUP or kayak sit alongside the dive programme. A dive computer is required by Portuguese law on every dive and is never included in a package price.
What divers say
Two things recur across reviews for Madeira Divepoint more than anything else: the house reef and the wreck dives. A long-time Madeira resident's account, posted years apart from more recent visitors, calls the house reef consistently fun to explore, and newer visitors separately single out the big wreck dive and the Garajau groupers as the trip highlight. Independent community accounts spanning 2019 to 2026 add up to the same read, a well-run, friendly, clean operation, and the pattern holds in the centre's overall ratings as well. Individual reviews from 2026 name staff, including Tamara and Vivviane, in beginner and family-focused terms. The one recurring discrepancy is the Bowbelle wreck's depth, where the operator's own account and at least one diver's account do not agree, a rare specific complaint set against an otherwise strongly positive pattern; the small share of lower ratings has no retrievable detail beyond it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Madeira Divepoint still a separate business from XpointMadeira?▾
Yes, in practice. XpointMadeira is the umbrella brand and website the original dive centre's domain now redirects to, covering boat tours, SUP, kayak and the diving programme together, but the diving-specific page and the PADI directory listing both still carry the Madeira Divepoint name. The change added a wider multi-activity brand around the dive centre; it did not retire the name.
How deep does the Bowbelle wreck dive actually run?▾
The centre lists the Bowbelle at up to 32 metres, the same figure it gives for the Pronto wreck. One independent diver account naming this centre, posted around 2019-2020, describes the same wreck as closer to 40 metres. Neither figure is confirmed against the other; either way, the dive runs deeper than the standard Open Water Advanced 30-metre recreational limit.
Do I need a specialty certification for the Pronto and Bowbelle wreck dives?▾
The centre lists both the Pronto and Bowbelle wrecks at depths beyond the 30-metre limit that applies to a plain Advanced Open Water certification, without a specialty. A Deep Diver specialty, or equivalent training, is worth confirming before booking either dive.
Can I pay by card at Madeira Divepoint?▾
No. The centre does not accept card payments in-store, so budget for cash or pay online when booking.
Does the single-dive price include full equipment?▾
No. The published 28 EUR guided-dive price covers only tank and weights for a certified diver. A full-equipment option is available as an add-on, and a dive computer, required by Portuguese law on every dive, is never included in any package.
Can a complete beginner try diving here without a certification?▾
Yes. The Try Scuba Diving product is open to first-timers from age 10, combining a pool session with an open-water dive on the house reef under PADI supervision, and a separate Bubblemaker programme exists for children from age 8.
