About
Fifty metres separate Scorpio Madeira's shop door from its own house reef on Ribeira do Natal beach, in Caniçal at Madeira's eastern end. No boat and no transfer is needed for that side of the operation: Try Scuba Diving, the shallow work on the Open Water Diver course, the standalone House Reef Diving product and the Diving with Stingrays trip all launch straight off the beach. The centre describes the reef as home to the largest seahorse colony in Madeira, alongside resident frogfish.
Boat products run the other way: a short, scenic transit along the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula cliffs to dive inside the marine reserve at the island's easternmost point, in groups the centre caps at 12. It's an exposed headland dive, so sea state and current on the day are worth checking with the crew before you commit. Divers there see volcanic cliffs and, depending on the day, dusky groupers, barracuda schools, amberjacks, octopus, moray eels and parrotfish, with turtles or monk seals possible.
The Diving with Stingrays trip stands apart from the rest of the programme. It is guided specifically by a marine biologist who specialises in rays and sharks, with a pre-dive ecological briefing and a scientific debrief afterwards, and the centre backs the encounter with a guarantee: a second dive, free of charge, if the group doesn't see any. Beyond the standard SSI recreational ladder, the course list runs to freediving, rebreather and Extended Range technical programmes and emergency training.
What divers say
Two reviewers, on two different platforms, single out the same thing: staff who read the diver in front of them instead of running a fixed routine. One account describes a group spanning ages 10 to 74 handled without anyone being rushed; another describes a diver rebuilding confidence after time away from the sport being brought back into it gently. Named individual guides recur across both platforms more than the brand does, a small-team operation reading through the reviews. Wildlife density is the other repeat note: turtles, octopus, seahorses and rays all come up unprompted. A missed logbook sign-off and a hard-to-reach follow-up turn up in exactly one account, not repeated anywhere else across either platform's review history, well outnumbered by a five-star run that spans both listings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a house reef dive at Scorpio Madeira, and what's actually on it?▾
Yes: it's roughly 50 m from the shop door on Ribeira do Natal beach, so shore products need no transfer at all. The centre describes it as home to the largest seahorse colony in Madeira, plus resident frogfish, on volcanic rock with sand patches and natural shelters; independent divers writing on two different review platforms both report finding seahorses and a frogfish there themselves.
What does the Open Water Diver course at Scorpio Madeira actually cover?▾
Four open-water dives progressing to an 18 m limit, run across 2.5 to 3 days. It certifies from age 10 as a Junior diver or 14 as an Adult diver.
Can beginners dive with stingrays at Scorpio Madeira?▾
Only certified divers: the Diving with Stingrays trip requires Open Water Diver certification and a minimum age of 14. It's guided by a marine biologist specialised in rays and sharks, with a pre-dive ecological briefing and a post-dive debrief, and the centre offers a second dive free of charge if the group doesn't see any.
What's the minimum age to dive with Scorpio Madeira?▾
It depends on the product. Try Scuba Diving takes divers from age 8. The Open Water Diver course certifies from 10 (Junior) or 14 (Adult). The single and double boat dives, the house reef dive and the stingray dive all require Open Water Diver certification and a minimum age of 14.
When is Scorpio Madeira open?▾
Daily, opening at 9:30 AM. The published closing time varies by listing, some give 5:00 PM and others run to 6:30 PM, so it's worth confirming directly if you're booking a late-afternoon slot.
Where does the boat dive at Scorpio Madeira actually go?▾
Into the Ponta de São Lourenço marine reserve at Madeira's easternmost tip, reached by a short, scenic run along the peninsula's volcanic cliffs. The centre's own account puts visibility there often above 25 m, and divers see dusky groupers, barracuda schools, amberjacks, octopus, moray eels and parrotfish, with turtles or monk seals possible.
