The dive

The park's own chart marks one point here, beside its -12 metre depth line and edging toward -13. It is a single stop on the eco-route programme, a marked position rather than a through-route with its own start and finish. The animals illustrated here, moray, scorpionfish and spiny lobster among them, typically hold rocky ground on this stretch of coast. Further out, the same chart shows the seabed shelving on past 20 metres and toward 33, but that deeper water lies beyond the marked point, outside this dive.1

What makes it special

Cala Figuera is one of thirty points along the Cap de Creus coastline that the Catalan park authority has surveyed and illustrated with its own underwater-itinerary eco-briefing sheet, a government eco-route designation. The sheet names six species for this exact point, headed by the yellowmouth barracuda, illustrated at the same standard the programme applies at all thirty of its stops.1

Know before you go

Independent diving here requires notifying the park authority in advance, the same as anywhere in Cap de Creus outside the Nord de S'Encalladora no-dive zone. The cap applies per boat, not per diver: six dives a day, thirty a week, one hundred twenty a year, plus the same pre-dive eco-briefing every boat in the park delivers.2 The sheet for this exact point adds its own instruction on top of that: keep 1.5 metres clear of both the reef wall and the seabed, alongside the park's standing ban on touching or fishing at the site.1

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same Cala Figuera as the dive site in Mallorca?▾

No. The Mallorcan site, generally called Cap de Cala Figuera or Punta Cala Figuera, sits near Calvia, close to a lighthouse, at around 20 metres, a different island and a different dive. This Cala Figuera is the Cap de Creus point in Catalonia, named on the park's own underwater-itinerary sheet.

Is 'Punta de Sa Figuera' the same dive as this one?▾

No, and the names are easy to mix up. 'Punta de Sa Figuera' (also written 'Punta de las Figueras') is a separate, deeper point in the same park, reported between about 24 and 42 metres near Cala Joncols and Roses, well past this cove's roughly 12-13 metre depth. Treat the two as different dives when researching or booking.
