About
Alex Boix opened Arenal Diving in 2004, under Hotel Arenal on San Antonio's beachfront promenade. Two decades later the center holds PADI 5 Star Dive Resort status and operates four dedicated boats from the same address. The fleet separates traffic by use: La Atlántida carries certified divers on the morning scuba trip, while Sea Explorer, Amazonia, and the WAHOO RIB handle snorkeling tours and private charters. Groups don't mix.
Morning boat departures run at 9:30 AM, returning around 1:30 PM after two dives. The west coast covers a lot of ground: Sa Conillera and Ses Margalides in the north, Cueva de la Luz cave system, the gorgonian walls at Las Gorgonias (Ses Bledes), and the dramatic terrain around Es Vedrà. Most sites are 10-25 minutes by boat. The Don Pedro wreck requires a longer transit south.
Courses run from Bubble Maker (ages 8-9, 2m depth) through IDC. Specialties include Deep Diving to 40m, Digital Underwater Photography, and Buoyancy Mastery. Technical certifications are listed in the PADI directory and available on request. The center has its own training pool, classroom, and house reef. Hotel Arenal sits directly above.
What Divers Say
Most of the 739 international reviews center on two things: the crew and the boat. Marcelo and Nacho are named across multiple accounts for patient, calm instruction. Captain Ivan gets credit for site selection. The large main vessel has a sundeck, unlimited drinks between dives, and a social atmosphere that reviewers consistently describe as relaxed and family-friendly. One family logged ten dives over a holiday and wrote specifically about the team's work with their 12-year-old daughter. Photo service pricing stands out as the main recurring complaint.
The picture from the Spanish diving community is more divided. Experienced local divers tend to categorize Arenal as tourist-oriented and point toward smaller club-feel operators for a diver-first atmosphere. Both perspectives reflect the same reality: the center is built for volume and accessibility. For international first-timers and families, 739 reviews and a Travelers' Choice award confirm it does that well.
