About

Alex Boix opened Arenal Diving in 2004, under Hotel Arenal on San Antonio's beachfront promenade. Two decades later the center holds PADI 5 Star Dive Resort status and operates four dedicated boats from the same address. The fleet separates traffic by use: La Atlántida carries certified divers on the morning scuba trip, while Sea Explorer, Amazonia, and the WAHOO RIB handle snorkeling tours and private charters. Groups don't mix.

Morning boat departures run at 9:30 AM, returning around 1:30 PM after two dives. The west coast covers a lot of ground: Sa Conillera and Ses Margalides in the north, Cueva de la Luz cave system, the gorgonian walls at Las Gorgonias (Ses Bledes), and the dramatic terrain around Es Vedrà. Most sites are 10-25 minutes by boat. The Don Pedro wreck requires a longer transit south.

Courses run from Bubble Maker (ages 8-9, 2m depth) through IDC. Specialties include Deep Diving to 40m, Digital Underwater Photography, and Buoyancy Mastery. Technical certifications are listed in the PADI directory and available on request. The center has its own training pool, classroom, and house reef. Hotel Arenal sits directly above.

What Divers Say

Most of the 739 international reviews center on two things: the crew and the boat. Marcelo and Nacho are named across multiple accounts for patient, calm instruction. Captain Ivan gets credit for site selection. The large main vessel has a sundeck, unlimited drinks between dives, and a social atmosphere that reviewers consistently describe as relaxed and family-friendly. One family logged ten dives over a holiday and wrote specifically about the team's work with their 12-year-old daughter. Photo service pricing stands out as the main recurring complaint.

The picture from the Spanish diving community is more divided. Experienced local divers tend to categorize Arenal as tourist-oriented and point toward smaller club-feel operators for a diver-first atmosphere. Both perspectives reflect the same reality: the center is built for volume and accessibility. For international first-timers and families, 739 reviews and a Travelers' Choice award confirm it does that well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dive sites does Arenal Diving visit from San Antonio?
The center covers Ibiza's west coast from San Antonio bay: Ses Margalides, Sa Conillera, the Cueva de la Luz cave system, La Bota d'es Vedrà, and the Las Gorgonias gorgonian walls at Ses Bledes. Most sites are 10 to 25 minutes by boat. The Don Pedro wreck on the south coast requires a longer transit and is not a default daily departure.
How much do guided dives cost at Arenal Diving?
A 2-dive boat trip costs EUR 110 with your own equipment (tank and weights) or EUR 130 with full rental gear. Multi-dive packs reduce the per-dive rate: 6 dives with full equipment run EUR 350 (EUR 58 per dive), and 10 dives with full equipment run EUR 520 (EUR 52 per dive). All prices include insurance and boat transport.
Is Arenal Diving suitable for beginners and families?
Yes. Bubble Maker sessions run daily at 3:00 PM for children from age 8 (2m depth). Discover Scuba is available from age 10. Reviews consistently mention patient instruction with young and first-time divers. The four-boat fleet lets beginner groups depart separately from certified divers.
What certifications and courses does Arenal Diving offer?
The full PADI ladder from Discover Scuba Diving through IDC. Specialties include Deep Diving to 40m, Digital Underwater Photography, and Buoyancy Mastery. Technical certifications (Trimix, Rebreather, Sidemount, Gas Blender) are listed in the PADI directory and available on request. All courses include PADI eLearning access, full equipment, insurance, and boat transport.
What is Las Gorgonias and why is it significant?
Las Gorgonias, at Ses Bledes about 6 miles from San Antonio, is considered the best-preserved gorgonian fan population in the western Mediterranean. The main gorgonian zone starts around 23m and extends to 60m. The site requires Advanced Open Water as a practical minimum. It is one of the defining dives on Ibiza's west-coast route.
Is a Scuba Refresh required if I haven't dived recently?
Yes. Arenal Diving requires a Scuba Refresh for certified divers inactive for more than 6 months. The maximum acceptable gap is 2 years. The refresh runs before the regular morning boat trip and costs EUR 150 with full equipment included.
Where is Arenal Diving located and how do I get there?
The center is at Avenida Doctor Fleming 16 in San Antonio, under the Hotel Arenal complex, next to Arenal beach. From San Antonio town center, follow the beachfront promenade for about 5 minutes. Hotel Arenal reception can direct you to the dive center on arrival.
