The dive
A volcanic rock wall runs along Madeira's eastern coast at Caniçal, its face broken by several large rocks that rise from a mixed bottom of rock and sand and shelter the fish and invertebrates living among them. Green and brown algae cover the rock throughout, and the water is calm here, with no current. Focus Natura, based in Santa Cruz, runs boat trips out to the wall; Scorpio Madeira Diving Center, based in Caniçal itself, also services the site, though its own pages don't confirm whether that means a boat trip or a more local access. Moray eels, octopus, wrasse, scorpionfish and parrotfish are among the species logged along the wall, together with mixed schools of reef fish working the rock.
What makes it special
Ponta do Altar pairs a current-free wall with a fish list that already runs five species deep. Calm water on an otherwise exposed stretch of Madeira's coast keeps the pace easy and leaves time to spend with the macro life sheltering among the rocks.
Know before you go
Fine algae covers much of the wall's rock; keep buoyancy tight near the rock surfaces to avoid stirring up silt and disturbing the macro life sheltering in the algae.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ponta do Altar in Madeira the same place as the Ponta do Altar Lighthouse?▾
How deep is the dive at Ponta do Altar?▾
No depth figure has been confirmed for this site. Certification is set no higher than Open Water and the wall's calm, current-free character keeps it approachable at any depth, but ask your operator for the planned range before you book.
Does Ponta do Altar sit inside a protected natural area?▾
A protected natural monument covers the peninsula east of Caniçal, and Ponta do Altar's own coordinate sits close enough to raise the question, but no confirmed boundary line places the dive site inside or outside it. Ask your operator about the current position before you book.
