Punta del Traire

Also known as: Pta del Traire (RNP), Pta del Traire

The dive

Rock and sand lead into a wall off Cap Norfeu, where a mix of bare rock and coralligenous growth holds until sand takes over again at depth. The park's own eco-briefing sheet marks a shallow shelf here between its -24 and -26 metre contour lines;1 beyond that shelf, the wall continues to a base near 45 to 48 metres. Dusky grouper and a resident skate work the wall itself, while the open water off the rock draws barracuda and, less often, tuna.

What makes it special

Six named species crowd this single stretch of rock, from a possible seahorse ground to a resident skate and a violet nudibranch.1 The wall itself offers two genuinely different dives under one name: a shelf that sits inside Advanced Open Water limits, and beyond it a technical-only stretch bottoming out between 45 and 48 metres.

Know before you go

Currents at this point are occasional, not constant: plan for a possible push and be ready to turn the dive early if it builds. Independent boats must notify the park before diving here and stay within its cap: six dives a day, thirty a week and 120 a year, applied to the boat, not to each diver.2 The site's own eco-briefing sheet layers a further rule on top of the park's standing no-touch and no-fishing ban: keep 1.5 metres clear of both the wall and the seabed.1 Treat the two published depths as two different dives, not one profile with a margin of error: plan the shallow shelf on its own terms, and treat anything past it as a separate technical dive with its own gas and decompression plan.

Why Dive Punta del Traire

What makes this dive site stand out.

  1. Two-tier wall

    A shelf near 24 to 26 m gives way to a route reaching 45 to 48 m

  2. Government eco-briefing sheet

Coordinate, six species and buoyancy icons come from the park's own sheet

  3. Possible seahorse ground

Named independently by both the government sheet and a local operator

  4. RNP protected point

Inside one of the park's three marine reserves with a no-touch, no-fishing rule

Safety considerations

What can go wrong here, and what divers do about it. Conditions change - take the briefing from the operator on the day.

  • Current: Currents at this point come and go; they are not a constant feature of the dive.Plan for a possible push and turn the dive early if it builds.
  • Depth: The wall continues well past the recreational no-decompression ceiling.Plan to the shallow shelf unless you hold the training for the deeper route, and treat anything past it as a separate technical dive.
  • Marine life: The site's own eco-briefing sheet asks for a 1.5 m gap from both the reef and the seabed.Hold trim off the wall and the sand instead of using either to steady yourself.
