About Mangamar Dive Center
Paseo Puerto de Cabo de Palos 18. The shop sits on the harbour with the two boats Ares (10 divers) and Kaiser (14 divers) moored steps from the door. Inside is the retail shop, dressing rooms, hot showers, a rinsing area, and a terrace with coffee. Mangamar predates 2017, but the operation visitors describe today dates from March 2023, when Dutch course-director couple Martin and Brenda van Gestel bought the centre and renovated it.
The team is unusually senior for a shop this size. Martin holds Platinum PADI Course Director status and Brenda holds Silver, which together enable the full instructor-training pathway on site. Tom Bonte is the named PADI Master Instructor, Juan Hidalgo leads operations, and Elena and Ivanna are the two instructors most often named in 2025 reviews. The team works in Spanish, English, Dutch, French, German, and Italian, in line with a predominantly international client mix.
The day-to-day rhythm is year-round and boat-based. Up to four single-tank departures leave the harbour, and the Naranjito wreck is bookable any morning at 07:00. The reserve rotation covers Bajo de Dentro, Bajo Piles I and II, Bajo de Testa, and Bajo de Fuera. The catalogue runs broad: PADI training from Open Water to MSDT, 25-plus specialties, technical diving via PADI TecRec and IANTD up to trimix with mixed-gas fills on site, dedicated adaptive diving, a summer camp for younger divers, and overseas trips to Costa Rica and Baja California. The centre holds PADI's Adopt the Blue conservation award.
What Divers Say
The dominant theme in post-2023 reviews is the change of ownership itself. Long-time visitors describe the takeover as a step-change in operational quality, with specific praise for the boats, the facilities, and small group sizes held even on busy summer days. Specific instructors are named rather than "the team" thanked generically, which usually signals steady personnel rather than rotating seasonal hires.
Multilingual capability is the second recurring thread, cited by Dutch, German, and Belgian reviewers as the deciding factor over neighbouring centres. The Kaiser comes up repeatedly as the more comfortable boat in the harbour, particularly for longer rides out to the reserve. Concrete criticism in current reviews is minor and consistent: limited overnight gear storage between dive days and no dedicated wetsuit and BCD rinsing tub, hoses available instead. Aggregate ratings sit at 4.7 out of 5 across 259 Google reviews and 4.6 out of 5 across 98 TripAdvisor reviews, with the centre listed at #4 of 21 Outdoor Activities for Cabo de Palos.
