About

Poseidon Diving has worked the beach at Platja Port Pelegrí since 1969, one of the oldest continuously operating dive centres on Spain's Mediterranean coast. Founded by two German divers, the business passed to Gerard Palou as director in 2001 and into family ownership when Palou bought it outright in 2012 with a partner known locally as Pecu. The original "Poseidon Nemrod Club" name still surfaces in old forum threads, but the day-to-day brand has been Poseidon Diving for years.

The operational signature is the beach launch. The 11-metre dive boat Poseidon sits on the sand at Platja Port Pelegrí, 22 seats, purpose-built, and divers walk gear from the centre to the boat rather than transferring to a marina. Most dive sites are 5 to 20 minutes away: the Ullastres pinnacles to the north-east, the Canons de Tamariu and Furió Fitó off Cap de Begur, and the Illes Formigues archipelago and the Boreas wreck to the south-west. Shore facilities include a fifty-diver changing room, hot showers, a dive shop, a rental loft with steel cylinders in four sizes plus DPVs, and Hofer air compressors.

The team works in five languages: Spanish, Catalan, French, English, and German. The centre holds PADI 5 Star IDC status with six or more instructors on staff, and also runs SSI programmes from Scuba Diver through Stress and Rescue — a dual-agency setup less common on this coast. Beyond the standard ladder, the offer extends to seven PADI specialties, a Freediving track, autonomous buddy-team dives from the beach, paddle-surf rental, and a Sunset Dive Experience with an on-board snack.

What Divers Say

Poseidon Diving holds 4.9 out of 5 on Google across 209 reviews and 4.8 out of 5 across 163 on TripAdvisor, placing first in Calella de Palafrugell's Tours and Activities ranking. The TripAdvisor breakdown runs 142 Excellent, 16 Good, and five below that combined. Recurring praise: patient instructors with beginners, children, and nervous divers; the ease of walking out of the changing room straight onto the boat; multilingual handling of mixed groups; and repeat-customer loyalty, with several reviewers describing year-on-year visits. One write-up specifically noted staff watching a seven-year-old while a parent dived.

Substantive negative reviews cluster on two themes: weather-driven dive swaps without a refund, and pre-dive equipment fit when the fitter and the in-water guide are different staff. Confirm equipment fit personally before entering the water, especially with younger divers, and ask how the centre handles dives diverted by sea conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Poseidon Diving compare with the Palamos-port centres?
It works the same coast and many of the same sites (Ullastres I/II/III, Illes Formigues, the Boreas wreck, Canons de Tamariu) but from a different shore base. The boat leaves directly from the sand at Platja Port Pelegri in Calella de Palafrugell instead of from a marina, so there is no harbour transfer before the dive.
What courses are available?
The full PADI ladder from Bubble Maker (ages 8-9) and Discover Scuba (10+) through Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue, Emergency First Response, and Divemaster, plus SSI Scuba Diver, Open Water, Advanced Open Water, and Stress & Rescue. Specialties include Deep, Nitrox, Underwater Photography, DPV, Night, Wreck, and Freediving.
Which dive sites does the boat work?
Most boat dives are 5 to 20 minutes from the beach. The regular roster covers the Ullastres pinnacles I, II, and III, the Illes Formigues archipelago, the Canons de Tamariu, Furio Fito off Begur, and the Boreas wreck. Port Pelegri itself is the house reef for shore-based training.
When is the centre open and what languages are spoken?
April to November, Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 18:00, closed Mondays. The team works in Spanish, Catalan, French, English, and German, reflecting both the founders and the regular French clientele that drives down the autoroute.
Is there accommodation on site?
Yes. The centre runs an apartment called Fragata, 100 metres from the dive shop, with two bedrooms, sofa-bed, full bathroom plus separate toilet, kitchen, sea-view terrace, and WiFi. Capacity is six and direct-booking rates are better than the equivalent Airbnb listing.
Where is the nearest hyperbaric chamber?
Hospital de Palamos, roughly fifteen kilometres north, the same chamber that serves the rest of the central Costa Brava diving area.
How do I get to Calella de Palafrugell?
Girona Airport is about an hour by road; Barcelona El Prat is 1.5 to 2 hours. Camping Moby Dick is a three-minute walk from the centre and Camping Calella de Palafrugell is fifteen minutes on foot or three minutes by car.
